Track : SISTERS ARE DOIN' IT FOR THEMSELVES
(From Album 'Be Yourself Tonight')With this song, Annie proved that she did infact have soul - as if we, the fans, were ever in any doubt, the critics needed a bit more persuasion. Well, she put them all to rest when she released this rocky duet number with Motown Soul Queen 'Arethra Franklin'.
Apparently Tina Turner was the first choice, and she probably would have done just as good a job as there was some friction at first between Aretha and Annie at the beginning - especially over the words. Aretha apparently wasn't happy over the potentially feminist sounding lyrics and objected to them, eventually getting her wish as some words were changed.
In the video, there is little sign of friction between the two, and most of this is probably myth anyway, but worth mentioning for trivia fanatics. Dolled up in full 80's attire, the pair sing side by side, matching each other note for note onstage - with cuts to old black and white footage of women doing all kinds of jobs from motor racing to protests - I think you get the picture.
There's also an interesting cut to a solo Dave Stewart playing guitar dancing all over the place and getting generally excited by the whole situation. The track reached #9 in the UK Charts. Interestingly, Dave Stewart went on to produce Aretha's own album 'Who's Zoomin Who?' in 1985.
