But she admits that fame "is fantastic - really puts you out on a limb. There's no in-between-your friends are very clearly your friends."

Someone she hops will always be her friend is Dave Stewart. She once said "I've loved Dave from the first day I met him and I'll love him for the rest of my life."

That may or may not be the case since he and Siobhan got hitched - Annie made an early exit from their wedding bash.

But she recently revealed how the news that the couple are about to have a baby has helped her out of a dark period of her life.

"It's wonderful for them and wonderful for me in a way because their relationship resolves something for me."

She explains: "It's a new phase in their existence and also in my relationship with Dave."

"Before he met Siobhan he was unsettled.

"Now there's a positive structure around him that will deepen his experience as a human being.

"It will also be something apart from the Eurythmics - something enriching.

"And I, in turn, want to enrich myself in the breathing space that this will give me."

One thing Annie has never doubted is her admiration for Dave as a musician.

"I'm only doing what I'm doing today because of Dave. Without him I don't think I would have a stood a hope in hell.

"He's a catalyst for me. He gives me confidence."

And inspiration perhaps?

The much-bruised Annie says: "I don't agree you have to be unhappy to write great songs - but there is something in it.

"When I have really extreme feelings I have to rush off and write them down sometimes."
