'I don't chase fame and glory'

Volatile singer Annie Lennox is living up to the title of the Eurythmics' new album - Savage.

For the reluctant superstar has lashed out angrily at the showbiz glitter game and the poseurs of pop whose only aim is to see their name in lights.

"So many people are chasing fame and glory and success" says the 32-year-old Scot.

"They want the fame before they've done anything. But I'm not interested in pursuing it. It's boring." she says to Radio One's Johnnie Walker to be broadcast tomorrow afternoon.

The rat race, then, is obviously not for our Annie. But if her talent means that Fame knocks, uninvited, on her door then she doesn't mind ushering it in - on her terms.

With a string of smash-hit records and sell-out tours behind her, it would be dumb for Annie to deny that she is a star on the world stage. And dumb she ain't.

"If you're stupid," she sneers, "fame may just be something that gets you into clubs and parties."

But coping with the pressures of being a pop celebrity presents new traumas.

And on the face of it, the crop-haired star hasn't fared that well.

Her complex relationship with the Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart has seen them stay together as musicians but break up as lovers.

She suffered a nervous breakdown; split with Dave just as he fell seriously ill with a collapsed lung, and lurched into a short marriage with Hare Krishna monk Radha Raman.

Then she left long-time boyfriend Billy Poveda just before Dave's marriage to Bananarama's beauty Siobhan Fahey this summer.

And all of this in the harsh glare of the publicity spotlight.
