Magazine Articles > The Face Interview - Part 4 <<< and too old to be a hardcore punk. Punks were 17, I was 23 already.
You met Poly Styrene and Lora Logic, formerly of X-Ray Spex, now Hare Krishna devotees, at a Women Of The Year lunch. Did that leave on you?
It did actually. We didn't say a great deal but what struck me was how detached they were and how beautiful they looked in their silk saris. I didn't think devotees wore silk or makeup. I think Lora and Poly were using the situation to get some message across about Krishna consciousness and I don't mean that negatively. They were invited and Lady Lothian who runs the event is very fond of Poly.
Apart from being detached and beautiful, what are they doing? Isn't religion to some extent a cop out?
You probably assume that I chant every day- well I don't. I have a real interest in Krishna philosophy just now but if you want to know the current state of the Lennox grey matter, it's one foot on one foot off. I'm not on terra firma and I know what you're saying. We think we're in control of our lives and to a certain extent we are, but no one has 100% control. . .
Speaking of control, what about the 1984 movie soundtrack saga...
Ooooh. I'm so sick of it. I don't even know what's happening. We turned it down initially, in fact several times, but Virgin kept coming back to us. Incidentally, 1984 wasn't the first soundtrack we'd been asked to do (they turned down Company Of Wolves). Instead of taking our holidays in the Bahamas, we slaved away. I've never worked so fast. We did the whole soundtrack in seven days, completed the soundtrack album in two and a half weeks. Consequently the music's still new to me, it 1ives, I love it. Without being egotistical I. think it's some of the best work we've done. Hov;ever, not once did the producers let us know that someone else (Dominic Muldow- ney) was doing a score. We were working to a Tough video and I kept saying to Dave, 'Why isn't the director here?' We thought he must be too busy. When I found out that our music wasn't going to be used for the press show I called the producer and told him that we felt completely let down and couldn't understand how they'd allowed this to go so far. Basically, Richard (Branson) loved our soundtrack and wanted it on but the producer didn't. We feel we've been misled, m£~capegoats in a political game which could have damaged our reputation. We still don't know what's hap- pening. Last we heard, they'd edited less than one percent of our score into the soundtrack. (Actually, as of November 10, 95% of the soundtrack is Eurythmics with only Muldow- ney's Oceana theme remaining. And Branson, who had trouble fixing up an American distribution deal for the film - one of the reasons he roped in Annie and Dave - came back from the States with three offers).
Has this episode made you more wary about future non-Eurythmics work? You expressed an interest in acting.
I'm always wary. The hairy situations that Dave and I have been in, people don't know. When we left The Tourists we were left holding the baby, owing a massive debt to RCA. We've been ripped off rotten by individuals wanting their cut of the cake.
You felt like a commodity? Is that why you turned down a £3 million Vidal Sassoon contract?
Oh certainly, I didn't want to turn myself into some kind of con&umer product. Never. >>>
